Mangalam oils

Wood-pressed and cold-pressed oils.

Mangalam oils are pressed from a single seed in a kolhu or a slow mechanical press, then filtered and bottled in Bhadohi, U.P. They are never refined, bleached or deodorised, so each oil keeps the colour, aroma and taste of its seed.

The range

One seed per bottle.

Groundnut and coconut come from the wooden kolhu. Mustard, sesame and flaxseed are cold-pressed. Nothing is blended, nothing is refined.

What is the difference between cold-pressed and wood-pressed oil?
Both press oil out of the seed mechanically, without chemical solvents. Wood-pressed oil comes from a kolhu with a wooden pestle that turns slowly, the traditional kachi ghani way. Cold-pressed oil comes from a slow mechanical press. Our groundnut and coconut oils are wood-pressed; our mustard, sesame and flaxseed oils are cold-pressed.
Why does pressed mustard oil smell so strong?
That sharp smell is the natural pungency of mustard seed. Refining strips it out; pressing keeps it. It mellows as the oil heats in the kadhai.
Can I cook with flaxseed oil?
Use flaxseed oil cold. Drizzle it over dal, raita or salads just before serving rather than frying with it.
Why is there a little sediment at the bottom of the bottle?
Pressed oil is filtered but not refined, so very fine seed particles can settle over time. It is a normal sign of an unrefined oil.
      Which pack sizes are available?
Groundnut and mustard oil come in 1 L bottles and 5 L jars. Sesame, flaxseed and coconut oil come in smaller bottles up to 1 L. Message us for current stock and bulk orders.
